Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS SHINTAIDO?

Shintaido is a movement practice that blends elements of martial arts, meditation, and expressive movement. Some parts feel energizing and expansive; others are quiet and reflective.

DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE OR FLEXIBLE?

Not at all. People of all ages and abilities participate. You can move at your own pace, rest when you need to, and adapt movements to your body. There’s no pressure to “perform” or keep up.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS IN A CLASS?

Classes typically include a mix of gentle warmups, guided movement sequences, and periods of stillness or reflection. Sometimes movements are done individually, sometimes with a partner, and often as a group. The atmosphere is calm, supportive, and non-competitive.

WILL I FEEL OUT OF PLACE IF I’M NEW?

No. Classes are designed to be welcoming to newcomers. There’s no ranking system or visible hierarchy. Everyone practices together, and you’re encouraged to simply explore at your own comfort level.

IS THERE A SPIRITUAL OR RELIGIOUS ASPECT?

Shintaido has a reflective, inward quality, but it’s not tied to any religion. You’re free to interpret the experience in your own way—physical, emotional, or simply as a way to unwind.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR OR BRING?

Comfortable clothing you can move in is perfect. No special equipment is needed.

HOW WILL I FEEL AFTERWARD?

Most people leave feeling more relaxed, open, and centered. Some feel energized; others feel deeply calm. It’s common to notice subtle shifts in posture, breathing, and overall ease.

CAN THIS HELP WITH STRESS OR PHYSICAL TENSION?

Yes. Many people find that the combination of movement and awareness helps release tension and quiet the mind. It’s a gentle but effective way to reset.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

The easiest way is to come to a class and try it. Bring your curiosity.
