Shintaido Encyclopedia Experiment

I would like to invite you to participate in an experiment to create a multilingual, online, Shintaido encyclopedia.
A few weeks ago, I was inspired by a note David Franklin made on the European Shintaido College weblog where he presented his idea for a Shintaido Lexicon. I was very excited by David’s idea and I thought it might become more powerful if we could have something similar to the free, online, encyclopedia Wikipedia.
Shintaido of America has allowed me to install the Wikipedia software on the Shintaido of America website and I would encourage people to login and experiment with the system by writing new entries or editing existing entries. Please do whatever you feel is necessary to decide whether or not the system might be useful for you.
One of the easiest ways to get started is to look at a few English definitions such as, Ageoroshi and Boh. Once there, you can click on links in the lower left corner to see the same definition in Czech, French, or Japanese.
As you get familiar with the system, you may want to visit the “Main Page” by clicking it’s link on the left side. You can also read more about the current system in my proposal.
These experimental wiki’s will remain running until March 1, 2006. By that time I hope that people in the global Shintaido community will be able to decide if they want to have a Shintaido encyclopedia and how best to support it.
If you have any questions or comments:

I look forward to seeing how this works out!

Thanks to Hana Restaurant

Hana, the Japanese restaurant at 5th and Irving in the Inner Sunset is moving at the end of this month.
Last Kangeiko, we gathered afterwards at Hana Restaurant to celebrate the warmth and wisdom of Okada Sensei’s instruction. And to party together in San Francisco. And to share the hospitality of the Hana staff. There have been many Shintaido celebrations at Hana’s over the decades, many meals with Ito, many meals with family and with friends and with visitors, many delicious meals served with warm welcomes from Mr. and Mrs. Mura and their staff.
The kindness of the Hana Restaurant staff is legendary to me. I am now calling for Shintaido-affiliated folk who’ve ever enjoyed Hana’s to send greetings to accompany Ito’s calligraphic offerings to Mrs. Mura, Seiko and Kuniuko.
Ito has three paintings of calligraphy, which he intends to present to Mrs. Mura, Seiko and Kuniuko on the last Monday. We would like to add the greetings of all the Shintaido people as part of this presentation. Please contact anyone you think wants to be included.
Please email me your message to the Hana staff. I will collect them and attach the sheets to Ito’s works.

Letter From Body Dialogue Editor

To the SoA community:
I want to introduce myself as one of the two new co-editors of Body Dialogue, with Stephen Billias.
I have been a Shintaido practitioner since February 1991.   I am filling some big shoes from Eva Thaddeus and David Franklin.  Thanks to both of them for their many years of service in the production of Body Dialogue!
Please email (or snail mail) articles to me as the primary person responsible for copy editing of material.
We are hoping to bring out the next issue of Body Dialogue in November, and want to feature the recent gasshuku in Japan.  I welcome articles on your experience: what did you gain from the gasshuku, what were some of the highlights, did you have any satori?
Also, Jim Sterling has asked his class a question I would pose to all of you: `what does the dojo mean to you?’  We practice in many different spaces, and how we use and work with that space impacts our keiko and kumite.  Please give it some thought and see what percolates.  This article might take the form of a dialogue or exchange among practitioners.
I look forward to working with you all.

Ito Sensei Hospitalized!

Please forward to everyone as we don’t have a formal way to contact all SOA members!

The following information is from Nancy Fukumitsu in Tokyo:

Carol Hui has just called me to let me know that Ito Sensei suffered a stroke here in Tokyo and is now in a large hospital somewhere near Nakamura Sei chan’s condominium. It is apparently quite serious and the next four days are very critical. It happened this morning (Wed.18th)–he had apparently been vomiting several times and felt unwell but had thought it was a flu’ bug.Anyways, if you would like to send a get-well message, you can email one or fax one to Carol and her husband will take all the messages to the hospital.

Please let everyone know

Dear Friends,
We are writing with unfortunate news. Ito-sensei suffered a stroke on Wednesday, February 18 in Tokyo and is in the hospital.

We have little news at this point. Apparently, he was feeling ill before being hospitalized but thought it was the flu.

We have put a communications infrastructure in place to keep people around the world informed and will send out word as soon as we receive it. Lee Seaman and Shin Aoki are in contact with people in Japan, and the two of us are acting as one collecting and dissemination point for information. If you hear any news, please forward it to us as soon as possible (at any time of day or night).

In the meantime, please put all your efforts into your thoughts and prayers for Ito-sensei, through Taimyo kata, shoko or the form of your choice. We trust you will put your sincerest efforts into your keiko on his behalf.

We promise to be in contact again soon

With thanks,
